Sherwin Poon

Unlike most Singaporean youth who take the academic path, Sherwin followed his dream of becoming a chef. His parents, Melvin and Esther, tried to talk him out of it.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN HIM

Esther worried throughout her son’s O-level year. He seemed unfocused and she often checked in with church leaders to see if he was keeping up with his studies. Yet, both Melvin and Esther found reassurance in the church’s structure: mandatory study hours to be completed to continue attending gatherings. They also found Sherwin surrounded by friends at church who pushed him to do his best and excel. Sherwin gratefully credits church for giving him confidence, fostering discipline and teaching him to love learning.

A COVETED INTERNSHIP IN FRANCE

Sherwin went on to study Culinary and Catering Management at Temasek Polytechnic. In Year 3, he was given a 6-month apprenticeship under Michelin Star Chef David Mollicone, one of the only two students.

In 2019, he launched Saison De Vie, a home-based fine dining experience that has earned rave reviews and made his parents proud. He is currently the Head Chef of Scotts Grill.

Melvin says Sherwin has grown not just in skills, but into a responsible and faithful member of the family. Despite knowing how tough the restaurant business can be, they are confident in his maturity, commitment and drive. They are now fully supportive of his passion!
